16 Blogging Tips For Beginners

Below I will show you how to blog and best blogging tips for veterans which will help you to achieve and take your blog to next level and make it successful blog very quickly

1) Be Yourself- I have seen many newbie bloggers who simply adopt the style of other bloggers how they blog and exactly try to be like them, not all the fingers are same you cannot be like them as this does not apply that you cannot be better yes you can absolutely but never try to copy other styles of blogging be yourself try to write your blog post in your ways which will make you stand from rest of the crowd
Try to tell your story about your failures and mistakes you did in early days of your blogging and how you overcome it this will put a tremendous impression on your readers

2) Provide Quality and Value- As mentioned earlier you cannot get away by simply writing  50 words blog post and hitting publish button you will not get much benefit from it instead try to write good solid and lengthy blog post at least 1000 words which explain the topic in great detail and insights and Google will definitely give better rankings for your blog posts in search results

3) Avoid Spamming- As the verge of SEO is all over the internet many bloggers try to all kinds of stuffs to increase their blog rankings and backlinks as backlinks helps a lot in improving rankings in search results they simply go to any free backlink generator websites which offer 1000's of backlinks for free but they are all from low quality sites which will get you penalized also many bloggers participate in paid link building strategies stay away from all such things and try to be legitimate and adopt genuine and natural ways

4) List Building- This is one the most important blogging tip for beginners that you must always start building your email lists from beginning no matter what, you can ask to any successful bloggers what is the biggest mistake they have done during their initial coarse of blogging and they will tell you that email list building why it important because they are most loyal visitors and readers of your blog and also if you are into affiliate marketing they are the one's who are going to get you some sales not any other organic visitors stumbling across your blog, One suggest I would like to give is if you don't have the budget for getting paid email marketing software like Aweber then you can go for free services like Mailchimp, madmimi,InInbox and many other But start building your email list now until it's to late to realize

5) Avoid Money Making- Yes there are blog who make heck lot of money by blogging but if you are just started blogging then for some time stop thinking about how to make money and concentrate more on building content for your blog as time passes later for sure you can think of making money out of your blogging but doing initial phase you have to just try to make your blog as useful and helpful for your readers to get that kind of readership and loyal readers who will help in your money making process later

6) Avoid Over Optimizing- You must have heard the term Keyword stuffing avoid doing this and don't try to over optimize your blog post thinking that it will get on Google first page it will take some time to climb the stairs and with time you blog post rankings will improve, I have seen bloggers who simply put their main keywords all over the place in their post don't do it try to make it more user friendly and use your keywords only few times where its needed

7) Social Media Engagement- According to Google they are now giving priority to blog posts which have got more shares and like on various social media sites as this reflects how many people are liking your content which indirectly sends signal to Google that your content is of great quality and people are liking it
One way to do this is to put social media sharing widgets in your blog post so it easy for your readers to share and like it with ease I would recommend to use Digg digg plugin for this

8) Keyword Research- Internet have grown huge so the keyword competitions in search engines as usually big blogs and website sitting in couch at top it no why that you can get ahead of them for highly competitive keywords and this is where many bloggers as well as some pro bloggers do mistake instead go for low competitive keywords as you have better chance for good rankings in search engines you can use  keyword research softwares like long tail pro or semrush for finding suitable keywords or you can also use google keyword tool

9) Professional Design- A Blog with neat and professionally designed theme gives good user experiences and don't make your blog design look cluttered with installing too many widgets and gadgets or plugins which will make your blog load slowly and decrease user experience If you are using wordpress you can go for Genesis theme which are great for SEO as well as it will professional look to your blog

10) Try To Be The Best- Here is what I believe instead of copying other work it better to do some research about your next blog post and try to put your words ahead in much better way as you can even though might be not the best in the industry but surely you have to try to level best to make it best

11) Publish Evergreen Content- This is one of my favourite blogging tips that focus on blogging about ever green content because these content is going to stay for long time in search results and people needs and you can drive lots of traffic over the time as your ranking increases

12) Improve Writing Skills- Blogging is all about writing and what if you have poor writing skills try to work on your writing skills try to be write more interesting and appealing content instead boring articles which you can find on thousands of other blogs and websites Also try to spice up you blog post with attractive images, try to work on your grammar as well as before publishing any blog post proofread it thoroughly also read the post yourself or ask your friend to read it to get the glimpse about how you your blog post sounds To learn great writing skills you can start following copyblogger it great blog with all necessary writing skills

13) Create Scannable Content- World is very busy so the internet users they don't have much time to read blog post which consist of single paragraph with no heading or subheading this is bad practice Especially for beginner who just starting blogging this is very important tips for you all that try to make your content scannable so busy users can get overview of it by just going through your blog post include bullets and lists also make proper use of h1 and h2 tags

14) Be Consistent- Most vital in your blogging strategy must be you have to be consistent in blog posting and try to regularly update your blog atleast once a week if you don't have much time for blogging but make it a habit to regularly contribute your blog which will improve your rankings in search engines very quickly
It should not be like posting 5 blog post on 1 day and no more post for 5 weeks always frequently update your blog to get more traffic

15) No Hide And Seek- Many pro bloggers and big players usually keep their best secrets within themselves even though they pretend to be more friendly and transparent with their readers but they are not they are someway or another play hide and seek sort of game with their audience So for newbie bloggers don't do this and try to be as straight forward as you can with your readers the more you give the more you will get benefited out of it also if you are using promoting any affiliate products mention that it's affiliate product and you will get commission out of it Don't get anxious with it you can see more sales if you are straight forward rather than hiding it behind the shield

16) Stay Motivated and Inspired- Last but not the least stay motivated and inspired for blogging because this is most important especially for bloggers who have just been blogging for few months that it takes time to see success but when you are there then there is no stopping So don't get demotivated give some time and have patience and ultimately success will be at your foot steps.

5 Unique Ways To Get Backlinks

Getting a ton of quality backlinks can take forever and most people just don’t have the time or patience to wait that long. There are many great ways to get backlinks such as; blog commenting, forum posting, article submissions, social bookmarking and guest posting, but the problem with these backlink building methods is that you will end up spending too much time away from your site and more importantly your readers. Wouldn’t it be nice if getting backlinks could be set on autopilot?
Great news, there is a way you can set your link building on autopilot that only requires you to do a minimal amount of upfront work. Before I get into the methods that will put your link building on autopilot I want to make sure you understand that this entire method revolves around good quality content.

Remember, “Content is king”!

1. Utilize Yahoo Answers

If you have been building backlinks to your site then I bet you know that Yahoo Answers is really a No-Follow site, right? Well to tell you the truth, it is, but that isn’t the reason you want to post answers on Yahoo Answers. The reason you need to post on Yahoo Answers is because there is a piece of software out there called WP Robot that when placed on a blog has a tool that pulls Yahoo Answers off Yahoo and places it on their site.

Do you get why this is beneficial for you?

Getting links is not that tough. All you have to do is answer questions that have a descriptive title such as, “How do I make money online?” or “How can I lower my car insurance premiums?”. The reason you need to answer questions with a large niche in the title such as making money online, insurance, weight loss or whatever is so you have more people pulling Answers from Yahoo onto their site.

2. Create A Multiple Series List

There are a few reasons to create a multiple series list and all three reasons combined work very well to get backlinks and traffic. The first reason multiple series lists work is because readers can follow along better with a list, they are just easier to scan and make learning less complicated. The other reason why multiple series lists get more backlinks is because people love to link to lists and the more lists you have the more backlinks you will get.

Example: If you write a 3 part series titled, “15 ways to get more traffic through Facebook” I would be a fool to only link to one part on my blog, so instead I would need to link to all three. I don’t know about you but I would much rather have three links pointing to my site as opposed to just one.

3. Add Information To Wikipedia

This is something I tested a while back and it works beautifully. Wikipedia is the biggest online encyclopedia and has over 3 million articles just in the English language. This is why finding a page to edit is very easy to do.

Here is how it works, you first need to find a page that can use some editing (I recommend finding a page that doesn’t have a lot of content but has a decent foundation to go off of). Once you have found the page you want to edit and that relates to your site you need to make sure that you have an identical topic on your site so that you have a reason to link to your site.

Example of identical topics: If you had a site about blogging then I great page to edit would be the page of Problogger, Darren Rowse(considering you had something new to add). Now in order to make it every more closely related I would try to get an interview with Darren that way I could fill in some missing parts to his Wikipedia page. After I have done that I can edit the page, insert my website link and wait.

Something that you must know is that like Yahoo Answers Wikipedia is a No Follow site so the entire point of using Wikipedia to get people to see the article on your site and link to that instead of the actual Wikipedia page.

4, Exchange Site Links For Content

Something that I have done quite a bit for my niche websites is exchange site links for written content. This isn’t guest posting, this method involves a site owner placing a link back to your site in order for you to write a specified number of articles.

The reason this works is because site owners want to get more content whether it is to submit to article directories, sell or just put on their site. I know this may not make a lot of sense to you now but it will. If you spend enough time on forums then you will notice that not everyone wants to buy content for a decent price, so all you have to do is tell the person wanting to buy the article that you will write 1 article each month in exchange for 1 link on their site. Trust me, people like to do this.

5. Give Away A Gift

My favorite way to get backlinks is to actually put out some link bait(AKA give away a gift). The link bait I always put out is a $25 gift card for Amazon.com. Everybody wants to get the free gift card so I tell my readers that all they have to do is link to my site and they will be entered into the drawing for the $25 gift card.

How I set it up: Since I want to get traffic and not only links I make the requirement that in order to be entered into the drawing the linking site needs to send at least 5 visitors having all different IP addresses and anything over 5 will count as another entry into the drawing. Think about it, if you only get 3 links from quality sites it would probably cost you around $200 per month for those links, but instead you only pay $25 with the hopes that the site owner keeps your link up for the chance to win another gift in the coming months.

The biggest different between these 5 unique link building methods and the normal link building methods is the fact that these are a more set and forget type thing while the others have to be catered to constantly.

6 Powerful YouTube SEO Tips That No One Talks About

We often forget that YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world. Being a site that hosts videos, we tend to miss the fact that a lot of people also use YouTube as a search engine to find what they want and need. These are the people who like to consume content in the form of video and are usually more qualified buyers and subscribers than the visitors from search engines.

A few years back, if you posted a video on YouTube with the relevant keyword in the title, it would rank in the top 10 results easily. But nowadays there are so many videos being uploaded in YouTube that YouTube SEO has become as important as website SEO. As an added bonus, one can optimize their YouTube videos and move their rankings up in YouTube search result pages just like in Google search results.

Many marketers have talked about YouTube SEO so I will start with the most elusive concepts first and then I will cover the frequently talked about tips as well.

1. Closed Captions

While watching YouTube videos you would have noticed a button ‘CC’ in the bottom right corner. CC stands for closed captions. YouTube is becoming global now and videos created in India are being watched and shared by people in US; videos from Europe are reaching people in Sri Lanka and so on. Captions not only enable more people to consume your video but YouTube also crawls the content in the captions! This has been proved by many experiments where we include a unique text string inside the captions file and when that string is searched on Google or YouTube the video will come up!

Earlier it used to be a complicated process to add CC to a video – one would need to specify the start and end time of each line and it would take hours. But recently YouTube introduced a speech recognition technology/feature which automatically detects the start and end of each line spoken and matches it to the video’s audio. So all you need to do is upload the script of the video and the captions will appear exactly in sync with the video. It is amazing how YouTube does this – but it is also the reason they are the No.1 in this market.

So a video on a topic with CC should definitely outrank the video on the same topic with no CC provided other SEO factors have also been taken care of.

2. Adding the Script in the Description

If you are creating the script for the speech in video, then adding the same script in the description of the video shouldn’t take much time. Google indexes this as well.

3. Naming the Video File with Keywords

If you are uploading a video about the ‘Health Benefits of Organic Foods’ then the file name of the video should be something like organic-food-benefits.avi or something similar. MOV0234.AVI is not going to be meaningful. The viewer of the video does not look at this but YouTube gives a relevancy credit to the file name because if your file name is named with your keyword then there is a better chance that your video is about what it says.

4. Create a More Engaging Video

This probably sounds straight forward and simple and you may even be tempted to skip this paragrapgh – BUT WAIT. I am about to say something which will blow you away.

YouTube gives relevancy credits to videos where people watch it for a longer time. This is not just a theory but has been tested by us. We uploaded two videos with almost the same SEO factors built in but the only change was the perception by the real human visitor. One video was engaging and the other video was not engaging to the real humans. 6 months later the more engaging video was ranking much better than the other video. So yes, YouTube gives credit to videos which are more engaging because it is a good way to measure the quality of the video.

For the purposes of guarding my niche from competition, I cannot reveal the videos I tested – so if you have a hard time trusting me, you can ignore this fact at your own risk.

5. Authoritative YouTube Channel

If you are posting a video on a fresh YouTube channel it is not going to have as much SEO power as the same video uploaded on a channel with has a lot of other good videos on the same topic. This is similar to website SEO – Posting an article in a fresh blog vs. posting an article in a high PR established blog makes a difference between heaven and hell.

Not only the video would get better rankings, but it will grow faster when the subscribers of that YouTube channel like, comment and share that video.

So always try to have established youtube channels for each of your niche and avoid posting videos on fresh channels. Also avoid posting irrelevant videos in the channels – it may dilute the SEO power of all the other videos on that channel.

6. Posting HD Videos Instead of SD

It is astonishing how many marketers do not even mention about uploading HD videos. Again this has been tested by us in several occasions. HD videos out-rank standard definition videos every time.
You may think that YouTube may not prefer HD videos because it costs them a lot of storage space and bandwidth – but they have more resources that you can imagine. The reason why they limit the length of the videos is not because of lack of storage or bandwidth but to prevent people from uploading copyrighted videos. This has been confirmed by YouTube itself.

It makes sense that a HD video should be better than a standard video. If someone is investing the energy and resources in creating a HD video then the content could be equally good.

So try to upload 1080P videos whenever possible and if you are doing screen cast or presentation videos – 720P should do the job.

Some of the other commonly talked about SEO methods are
  • Having a relevant headline with proper keywords
  • Putting your link in the description above other content with http://
  • Including tags from other videos which rank well for the keywords that you are targeting
  • Giving a call to action at the end of the video for liking your video and/or subscribing to your channel.
Hope you found my insights useful. Please leave you comments.

Outrank Your Competitors Faster with These New SEO Tools

A couple of weeks ago I got an email from the CEO of a company called cognitiveSEO. I knew they offered a set of SEO tools, but I had never used or tested the tools personally. The CEO gave me a live demo of what the tools could do, and I was impressed, so much that I decided to test the tools myself.

The first thing you’ll notice is that the user interface is really polished, and there are some useful features that you rarely find on similar sites, like the option to create bookmarklets on your browser and to use those to analyze the current website or page you are visiting.

After playing around a bit I tested the “Backlink Report” tool. It gives you a complete view of the backlink portfolio of a specific page or of a domain name. You’ll get details like the total number of links, the authority of the page/domain according to various sources, a cloud with the anchor text terms, the authority of the incoming links and so on. The cool thing is that you also have access to all the individual links, as you can see on the image below:

This seo tool will even track when the link was first found, whether it’s nofollow or dofollow, and the IP address of the linking website.

Next I decided to create a campaign, which is how you manage your activities inside the suite. You basically create one campaign for each website you want to improve the rankings, and while you add a new campaign you’ll be able to add the URL of your competitors, whether you want the tool to track new backlinks to your and so on. You’ll notice that it takes a while to create the campaign, but that’s because the tool will go and crawl on-demand all the links that it can find for your site and your competitors.

Once your campaign is ready to go, you have four sections to explore: Inboud Link Analysis, Link Management, Rank Tracking and To dos.

The Inboud Link Analysis section will give you all the backlink data, in a similar fashion to the Backlink Report, but with much more data. However in this section you have the option to compare your backlink portfolio with that of competitors, as you can see on the image below:

One cool thing you can do with the Link Analysis tool is to identify websites that have been punished with Google’s Penguin update. Here is a video case study on how you can actually do this.

You also have the ability to filter the links. For instance, you can select only links that were tracked over the past 3 months, that have a ranking authority of at least 3 and that are coming from blogs. So basically you can perform detailed research to understand why your site or that of a competitor is gaining or losing rankings over a certain period of time.

The Link Management section is where you go to manage and grow your backlinks. The tool automatically tracks all new links, as well as the existing ones to make sure they are still online. There’s even a preview tool that let’s you see on a small thumbnail exactly where your link appears on the website that is linking to you. You can also compare your performance with competitors here.
The Rank Tracking section allows you to input keywords you want to track, and it will keep a time line of your rankings, as well as that of competitors. You’ll notice that the graphics are really elaborate and customizable. All the tracking is done on a daily basis, in all the 3 big search engines (Google/Bing & Yahoo).

Finally the To-Do section is where you can schedule tasks, co-ordinate efforts with your partner or other members of the team and so on.

As a feedback to the creators of this toolset, I would love to see more modules added in the future. Social stuff and On Page reporting will be great add-ons to the toolset.

If you are planning to take your SEO to the next level I would take a look at cognitiveSEO. The pricing is pretty affordable (starts at $19 per month), and the set of tools you’ll get are among the best in the market, so check it out.

Why Google’s Hummingbird Matters – and How to Future-proof Your SEO

This is a guest post by SEO expert Joe Williams.

One of the best ways to improve your SEO is to stay up-to-date with Search Engine’s algorithm changes. And in case you didn’t hear Google just had a big one – the biggest in over 10 years!
Google announced on the eve of its 15th birthday (September 26th) that it had completely rewritten its main algorithm, and named it Hummingbird. Interestingly, Google unofficially launched it a month earlier but this largely went unnoticed in SEO circles.

So how come such a big update (rumoured to affect 90% of searches) went undetected by many so-called SEO experts?

Because this is just the beginning. The beginning of something much bigger which I will reveal in this post.

Why You Need to Understand Hummingbird

Hummingbird is Google’s whole search engine and includes smaller pieces like PageRank, Panda and Penguin which are sub-algorithms. The underlying framework has become more powerful, meaning it can better support these parts.

More importantly, Google will develop new enhancements to Hummingbird in the coming months (and years) to provide a much improved experience to its users.

How to Future-Proof Your SEO

Hummingbird is likely to be around for a long time, perhaps another 10 years. And the good news is that Google has left plenty of clues as to what it wants now and in the future.  Here are six that I would like to share:

#1 – Understand Your Customers Better

As a key part of Hummingbird, Google has upped its sophistication in understanding natural language. It now considers every word entered into a search, meaning it can better use natural and conversation searches.

For example, if you search ‘Edinburgh castle’ and ‘show me pictures of Edinburgh castle’ you see very different results:

Edinburgh-castle

That’s because the intent of the searcher is better understood. Google is getter smarter and wants you to do the same by creating content that matches up with the intent of its users (and your customers).
Tip: Create customer profiles for your business and provide answers to their questions in all stages of the buying cycle.

#2 – Research Topics and Not Just Keywords

Google’s improved understanding of natural language means it has a deeper understanding of the relationships of keywords that form topics. Keywords still matter but they don’t rank on their own: the context is becoming more important.
Next time you optimise content, research which keywords you wish to target, think about the customer’s search intent and create relevant content that not only sells your products or services but also answers questions your customers might have before they are ready to buy. This helps Google in all stages of the buying cycle and builds trust with your customers.
Tip: Get familiar with the new Google Planner to research both keywords and topics.

#3 – Act Like an Author and Less Like an SEO

It’s no longer just about keywords and webpages: you need to become an authority within your industry. You can do this by having your customer’s interest at heart, through educating and/or entertaining them, and once you have built your trust you can then sell to them too.
Being an authority means becoming an author and an industry expert. Google wants to identify (and reward) the expert authors for each industry. It also wants to know what they look like too:
expert-author
Tip: Build in-depth expert articles and get setup on Google Authorship.

#4 – Think and Act Like a Brand

People remember brands. People trust brands. And most importantly people have emotional bonds with brands and tell their friends about them.
Google loves brands too:
Brands are the solution, not the problem. Brands are how you sort out the cesspool.
- Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google
Put another way, Eric is saying that brands are for the power of good because they improve the Internet and they are trustworthy for both Search Engines and its users.

And now for the good news: the Internet is a level playing field which means small-time brands can make it big more often than you might think.

Tip: Have a clear purpose and vision and build up your trust through expert content.

#5 – Avoid Gaming or Trying to Trick Google at All Costs

I’ve been a digital marketer since 2005 but after a few years I fell out of love with Google and SEO. I nearly changed career – twice! To dominate in competitive industries you needed take short-cuts and this often meant tricking Google into thinking your site was more relevant or reputable than it actually was.

This all changed firstly in 2011 with the introduction of Google’s Panda algorithm, and then later in 2012 with the Penguin update.

Although this was a tricky time for lots of business owners, this made Google a much fairer referee, and sites which thought and acted like both brands and experts were able to succeed more easily. This made me a much happier SEO. :-)

Tip: Make sure you know rules and respect Google’s SEO guidelines.

#6 – Stay Up-to-Date

It sometimes feels like Google are forever moving the goal posts for SEO. Luckily that’s not really true. The core principles stay the same year after year. Build a search engine friendly site (WordPress is great for this), create relevant content (for your customers) and build your website reputation (by creating remarkable content that people want to share and link to).

What changes more frequently is Google’s view on what it considers trustworthy, particularly when building your reputation. In fact, Google tweaks its algorithm daily. These are mainly minor tweaks but every few months or so it has a major update to its algorithm (think Panda, Penguin or Hummingbird) with the goal of benefiting the trustworthy and relevant sites.

Tip: Check out Moz’s comprehensive and up-to-date changes log on Google’s algorithm. It provides links to further reading and can be great for diagnosing why your site has risen or fallen off Google.
We are in a new and exciting era of Google and SEO. Short-cuts and tricks are risky and usually get you into trouble. If you wish to succeed, you need to play the longer game through building trustworthy content that is both relevant and reputable to your customers and wider industry.
Hopefully some of the tips above will help you do just this and steer your website into the direction Google is heading, and help grow your business.

The Little Mistake That Could Cost You Loads of Free SEO Traffic

This guest post is by SEO expert Joe Williams.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen this mistake. You might be making it without realising.
Sometimes it can cost you a couple of days’ traffic, sometimes a couple of weeks.

I even saw it cost one unfortunate business owner two months of free traffic, and several thousand pounds in revenue loss.

I’ve been an SEO consultant for seven years. I’ve SEO’d big brands and small one-man shops, and this little (but really harmful) mistake happens to the best of them. Thankfully, it’s very simple to fix.

When It Happens and How to Avoid It

Websites are most vulnerable to this traffic killer just after the release of a new design. That’s because the web designer will want to please the client by showing progress and getting feedback on different iterations.

Often, the web designer will create a subdomain for the new website like: newdesign.example.com. This creates a bit of an SEO problem. newdesign.example.com may get indexed by search engines, and this creates duplicate content which isn’t any good for SEO.

So, if the web designer is savvy, he’ll block access for the newdesign.example.com – by adding a robots.txt file. This is a two minute job, and will prevent search engines from accessing the new sub domain.

It’s a regular plain text file and will look like this:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /

So far, so good.

Google’s web crawler is known as Googlebot and its job is to discover and index pages. It’s known as a user-agent. Before it can visit any webpage, it must visit the robots.txt file to learn what areas it can and can’t index. It follows these instruction to the letter.

In User-agent: *, the * acts as a wildcard which means the following rule below it applies to all user-agents (including Googlebot).

In this case, the forward slash in, Disallow: / indicates that all the content on the new subdomain should not be crawled or indexed.

Now for the Little Mistake that has Big Consequences

Typically when new designs get signed-off, they are often behind schedule. So it’s usually a rush getting the new design live onto the main website (e.g. example.com).
The designer will then copy all the files from the development subdomain (e.g. newdesign.example.com), and typically this includes the robots.txt file:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /

If the robots.txt file remains unchanged and goes live on the main site, it’s like traffic workman holding up a big red stop sign. During this time no (SEO) traffic will be allowed to go through. The stop sign only changes to green and welcomes Google back when the robots.txt returns to normal and the forward slash is removed, like this:

User-agent:
Disallow:

Really easy to fix but a really easy mistake to make too, wouldn’t you say?

From my experience this happens  5 to 10% of the time – but usually isn’t a big problem because it’s discovered within a day or so.

But for one client of mine, this had been going on for two months, meaning they missed out on bucket loads of cash. Needless to say, they were pretty mad with their web designer!

Why don’t you check your site right now? The robots.txt file always lives at the root of your website, like this:
robots-txt
The DailyBlogTips robots.txt disallows search engines access to two folders. This is intentional to ensure search engines don’t find and index technical pages within the folder.

And always remember, if you have a new website and you’ve used a designer or developer to help you, check the robots.txt file when the new design goes live.

Get Great Blog Post Ideas by Using the Google Keyword Planner

Do you wish you had the knack of picking popular topics that will bring you lots of search engine traffic?

You don’t need to be a marketing guru or great at following a trend. Instead, you can find out what readers are searching for … and tailor your posts to fit them.

If you’ve been blogging (or thinking about blogging!) for a while, you’ll have come across the concept of keywords. These are simply search terms that people use in Google and other search engines.

By writing a post inspired by a popular keyword term, you increase your chances of getting organic search engine traffic.

(Organic traffic is the kind that comes naturally, as opposed to paid traffic, which is from people clicking on ads.)

When Google’s Keyword Tool was replaced by the Keyword Planner, I found it a little hard to get to grips with, especially as it’s designed for advertisers rather than bloggers to use. It’s thanks to my friend Joe Williams that I’m getting the hang of using it now.

Joe made a great video demonstrating exactly how to use the Keyword Planner for SEO (search engine optimisation) purposes. He writes:

Black Hat vs White Hat SEO: What You Need to Know

You’ve probably noticed that the internet can be a bit like the Wild West.

Newbies ride into town regularly – often with high hopes of getting rich quick. Perhaps you’re one of them (or perhaps you can at least remember those days).

“Snake oil” salesmen make outrageous promises about how their product can solve all your problems (usually with a heavy dose of yellow highlighter, and a few fake countdown timers).

And just like in the West, there are goodies and baddies – “white hats” who obey the law and “black hats” who break it. In fact, you may well have heard of “white hat SEO” and “black hat SEO” already.

Online, Sheriff Google lays down the law – and you definitely don’t want to get caught doing something you shouldn’t.

So let’s take a look at what you need to know.

What’s SEO?

SEO stands for “search engine optimisation”. It’s the practice of getting your website or blog to rank highly in search engines – particularly Google, which dominates the market.

Sometimes, you’ll also hear “an SEO” used to mean “a professional search engine optimiser”.

Black Hat SEO

Black Hat SEO is SEO that goes against Google’s rules. It results in a website that Google won’t want to promote because no-one will want to read it.

Black Hat practices include:
  • Paying another site to link to yours.
  • Creating keyword-rich links using dodgy techniques, such as trackback spam.
  • Participating in link exchanges with sites that have nothing to do with yours.
  • “Scraping” other people’s content to use on your site.
  • Using hidden text that readers can’t see but search engines can (e.g. putting lots of keywords in white text on a white background).
  • Getting your site linked to from link farms.
(You can find a fuller list of Black Hat practices here.)

Basically, if a technique sounds too good to be true, it probably is. You can’t automate the process of building links to get hundreds overnight.

White Hat SEO

White hat SEO plays by the rules. It results in a website that Google naturally wants to promote, because it’s full of great content and easy for readers to engage with.

White Hat practices include:
  • Creating high-quality content for your blog.
  • Using WordPress or another solid CMS (content management system) for your site, so it’s well structured.
  • Writing great guest posts for other blogs, putting the relationship (not the backlink) first.
  • Using Google Webmaster Tools to fix any problems with your site.
  • Crafting clear, direct titles for your posts that use the same keywords readers would use.
It might seem like a no-brainer to you that White Hat SEO is the way to go … and we agree.

Black Hat SEO may lead to some quick results … but these will be swiftly followed by a huge drop in traffic when Google catches you. (And bear in mind that Google’s algorithms are getting cleverer all the time.)

As Daniel explains in Business is a Marathon, Not a Sprint, you should focus on the long-term, not on short-term results.

By using White Hat practices, you’ll be sure of building a site that stands the test of time.

You won’t have to worry about Google updates knocking you down the rankings, and you’ll also find it easy to engage in other kinds of marketing – like using social media – because you’ll have something truly valuable to offer your readers.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this too: are you actively using SEO techniques to get more traffic to your site? And have you ever used Black Hat methods (perhaps unwittingly) – or are you firmly on the White Hat side?

Search Ranking Factors for 2014

If you want your site to rank high on Google, you better keep an eye on the factors that influence the rankings, right? And mind you that you better keep an eye on those regularly, as they might change considerably over the years.

If you want a refresher, I recommend the 2014 Ranking Factors Study published by the SearchMetrics guys. The infographic summarizes the picture, but you can also read about how they performed the researched, how to interpret the numbers and so on.

Some highlights in case you are in a hurry:

  • Website technical quality is gaining importance. In other words, if your website has HTML errors, is slow or not optimized for mobile devices, your rankings will suffer.

  • Backlinks remain an important factor. However, Google is trying to put a lot more emphasis on the quality and relevancy of the links, and it’s also trying to separate natural vs. artificial backlinks.

  • Social signals like Facebook Shares and Google +1s are being considered in the ranking algorithms, though their influence is not clear.

  • Oldschool factors like keyword in the domain name are losing importance.

  • Authoritative sites seem to enjoy extra exposure in the search rankings, so focus on building a brand around your site.

SEO Myths Every Business Owner Must Understand

The larger part of SEO still remains a mystery among most people who venture online. In effort to shed some light to the SEO mysteries, a lot of myths have been brought about. Most of the myths aim at educating people on making the best use of SEO strategies. However, the information contained in the myths is not only untrue but misleading as well. This is because people tend to develop profound beliefs and take unnecessary caution even when there is no need for alarm.

It is important to be very cautions before believing in anything that people tell you with regard to SEO. It does not matter on how many people convince you on the existence of a certain SEO theory. A through scrutiny must be done before implementing any strategy instigated by people out there.
You should understand that myths are developed so easily and have the capacity to spread in a remarkably short time. In fact, myths are very persuasive and can be believed easily. However, listening to myths and following them can bring forth very serious implications to your site and business. In this regard, you must understand and avoid SEO myths at all costs if positive achievements must be registered in your business.

Let’s have a crackdown on the five common myths that tend to dominate the minds of many online businesspersons:

1.The More the Keywords the Higher the Ranking

The use of keywords for SEO has for long been abused. Majority of people who venture online have the perception that a lot of keywords are significant in elevating the rating and ranking of websites. On the contrary, use of many keywords may trigger more harm than good in terms of ranking your site.

It is important to note that search engines keep being updated over time. This means that search engine features are manipulated to suit modernity. Currently, a lot of keywords in website content are not valued by search engines. As a matter of fact, you might end up suffering penalties for misuse of keywords.

In most cases, it is advised that you use keywords sparingly. The density of main words and phrases should not exceed 2% if high web ranking must be achieved. In addition, keywords must appear natural and in context with the content at hand. By doing so, search engines will acknowledge your content as natural hence rank it accordingly.

2. Link Building Is Not Paramount

If you believe in the claims that link building is not of essence in online business, then high chances are that your business will perish before you even start venturing. You must bear in mind that connecting with the online community is the pillar behind any successful business.

For a long time now, links have always been considered valuable by search engines. In fact, efforts to eradicate the use of links by search engines only turn futile. This explains the profound use and application of links in business websites.

There are different strategies you can use to build links for your website. However, you must be very selective with the kind of technique you use. The bottom line is the link building is important and should not be snubbed.

3. The More the Links, the Better

Link stuffing is one of the common tendencies that online businesspersons embrace not knowing that it is a recipe of failure. You will at times come across a website which carries link-stuffed articles. Such articles feature links and anchor texts after a short set of words. This is triggered by the belief that a great number of links is ideal in creating perfect connection in the web.

You must not forget that articles are composed for humans and not machines. This means that you should make your articles interesting and fun to read. An article with a lot of links is not only distracting but irritating and annoying as well. It is never interesting to come across varying colors of links in an article. It is even confusing on which link you should follow when you have so many at your disposal.

In a different note, the avenue that you use in building links matters a lot. Currently, it is very possible to get a bunch of links in a very short time with the help some trending software in existence. However, most people forget to consider quality and end up focusing on quantity. The quality of links that you use should be your prime consideration. A lot of links do not matter.

4. Social Media Is Not Necessary

This is the biggest lie with regard to SEO that people instill in the minds of others. Social media has always been considered a very vital tool in promoting online visibility and SEO in general. In most cases, the belief that social media is not necessary for SEO is perpetuated by people who do not make use of the platforms.

With the likes of Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram among others, it is possible to make high gains in your online business. This is because the sites carry a huge number of people who share ideas and interact all through. You can therefore make use of the platforms to build links which will in return channel traffic in your site. You can use interesting links to bait people towards your site hence achieve high ranking in search engines.

5. Experience Does Not Matter

If you thought that SEO can be done by just any other person, then that is not so at all. Most people especially amateurs have the belief that SEO is simple hence can be done without any assistance from experienced people. It should be noted that without experience on SEO trends and principles, success may be literally impossible to achieve.

Some of the SEO trends that you must understand to the latter include social sharing, content marketing, guest posting, keyword use, back linking among others. You should have on your fingertips all the strategies on how to implement the respective tools for perfect SEO in your site. Lack of experience will only drain your efforts to waste. You might also suffer huge loses which will set you back remarkably.

While some SEO myths may carry some truth, it is important to avoid believing in anything that comes your way. The best way is to employ professionalism and factual approaches in enhancing SEO in your site as opposed to believing in baseless myths.
