The Little Mistake That Could Cost You Loads of Free SEO Traffic

This guest post is by SEO expert Joe Williams.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen this mistake. You might be making it without realising.
Sometimes it can cost you a couple of days’ traffic, sometimes a couple of weeks.

I even saw it cost one unfortunate business owner two months of free traffic, and several thousand pounds in revenue loss.

I’ve been an SEO consultant for seven years. I’ve SEO’d big brands and small one-man shops, and this little (but really harmful) mistake happens to the best of them. Thankfully, it’s very simple to fix.

When It Happens and How to Avoid It

Websites are most vulnerable to this traffic killer just after the release of a new design. That’s because the web designer will want to please the client by showing progress and getting feedback on different iterations.

Often, the web designer will create a subdomain for the new website like: newdesign.example.com. This creates a bit of an SEO problem. newdesign.example.com may get indexed by search engines, and this creates duplicate content which isn’t any good for SEO.

So, if the web designer is savvy, he’ll block access for the newdesign.example.com – by adding a robots.txt file. This is a two minute job, and will prevent search engines from accessing the new sub domain.

It’s a regular plain text file and will look like this:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /

So far, so good.

Google’s web crawler is known as Googlebot and its job is to discover and index pages. It’s known as a user-agent. Before it can visit any webpage, it must visit the robots.txt file to learn what areas it can and can’t index. It follows these instruction to the letter.

In User-agent: *, the * acts as a wildcard which means the following rule below it applies to all user-agents (including Googlebot).

In this case, the forward slash in, Disallow: / indicates that all the content on the new subdomain should not be crawled or indexed.

Now for the Little Mistake that has Big Consequences

Typically when new designs get signed-off, they are often behind schedule. So it’s usually a rush getting the new design live onto the main website (e.g. example.com).
The designer will then copy all the files from the development subdomain (e.g. newdesign.example.com), and typically this includes the robots.txt file:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /

If the robots.txt file remains unchanged and goes live on the main site, it’s like traffic workman holding up a big red stop sign. During this time no (SEO) traffic will be allowed to go through. The stop sign only changes to green and welcomes Google back when the robots.txt returns to normal and the forward slash is removed, like this:

User-agent:
Disallow:

Really easy to fix but a really easy mistake to make too, wouldn’t you say?

From my experience this happens  5 to 10% of the time – but usually isn’t a big problem because it’s discovered within a day or so.

But for one client of mine, this had been going on for two months, meaning they missed out on bucket loads of cash. Needless to say, they were pretty mad with their web designer!

Why don’t you check your site right now? The robots.txt file always lives at the root of your website, like this:
robots-txt
The DailyBlogTips robots.txt disallows search engines access to two folders. This is intentional to ensure search engines don’t find and index technical pages within the folder.

And always remember, if you have a new website and you’ve used a designer or developer to help you, check the robots.txt file when the new design goes live.

Get Great Blog Post Ideas by Using the Google Keyword Planner

Do you wish you had the knack of picking popular topics that will bring you lots of search engine traffic?

You don’t need to be a marketing guru or great at following a trend. Instead, you can find out what readers are searching for … and tailor your posts to fit them.

If you’ve been blogging (or thinking about blogging!) for a while, you’ll have come across the concept of keywords. These are simply search terms that people use in Google and other search engines.

By writing a post inspired by a popular keyword term, you increase your chances of getting organic search engine traffic.

(Organic traffic is the kind that comes naturally, as opposed to paid traffic, which is from people clicking on ads.)

When Google’s Keyword Tool was replaced by the Keyword Planner, I found it a little hard to get to grips with, especially as it’s designed for advertisers rather than bloggers to use. It’s thanks to my friend Joe Williams that I’m getting the hang of using it now.

Joe made a great video demonstrating exactly how to use the Keyword Planner for SEO (search engine optimisation) purposes. He writes:

Black Hat vs White Hat SEO: What You Need to Know

You’ve probably noticed that the internet can be a bit like the Wild West.

Newbies ride into town regularly – often with high hopes of getting rich quick. Perhaps you’re one of them (or perhaps you can at least remember those days).

“Snake oil” salesmen make outrageous promises about how their product can solve all your problems (usually with a heavy dose of yellow highlighter, and a few fake countdown timers).

And just like in the West, there are goodies and baddies – “white hats” who obey the law and “black hats” who break it. In fact, you may well have heard of “white hat SEO” and “black hat SEO” already.

Online, Sheriff Google lays down the law – and you definitely don’t want to get caught doing something you shouldn’t.

So let’s take a look at what you need to know.

What’s SEO?

SEO stands for “search engine optimisation”. It’s the practice of getting your website or blog to rank highly in search engines – particularly Google, which dominates the market.

Sometimes, you’ll also hear “an SEO” used to mean “a professional search engine optimiser”.

Black Hat SEO

Black Hat SEO is SEO that goes against Google’s rules. It results in a website that Google won’t want to promote because no-one will want to read it.

Black Hat practices include:
  • Paying another site to link to yours.
  • Creating keyword-rich links using dodgy techniques, such as trackback spam.
  • Participating in link exchanges with sites that have nothing to do with yours.
  • “Scraping” other people’s content to use on your site.
  • Using hidden text that readers can’t see but search engines can (e.g. putting lots of keywords in white text on a white background).
  • Getting your site linked to from link farms.
(You can find a fuller list of Black Hat practices here.)

Basically, if a technique sounds too good to be true, it probably is. You can’t automate the process of building links to get hundreds overnight.

White Hat SEO

White hat SEO plays by the rules. It results in a website that Google naturally wants to promote, because it’s full of great content and easy for readers to engage with.

White Hat practices include:
  • Creating high-quality content for your blog.
  • Using WordPress or another solid CMS (content management system) for your site, so it’s well structured.
  • Writing great guest posts for other blogs, putting the relationship (not the backlink) first.
  • Using Google Webmaster Tools to fix any problems with your site.
  • Crafting clear, direct titles for your posts that use the same keywords readers would use.
It might seem like a no-brainer to you that White Hat SEO is the way to go … and we agree.

Black Hat SEO may lead to some quick results … but these will be swiftly followed by a huge drop in traffic when Google catches you. (And bear in mind that Google’s algorithms are getting cleverer all the time.)

As Daniel explains in Business is a Marathon, Not a Sprint, you should focus on the long-term, not on short-term results.

By using White Hat practices, you’ll be sure of building a site that stands the test of time.

You won’t have to worry about Google updates knocking you down the rankings, and you’ll also find it easy to engage in other kinds of marketing – like using social media – because you’ll have something truly valuable to offer your readers.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this too: are you actively using SEO techniques to get more traffic to your site? And have you ever used Black Hat methods (perhaps unwittingly) – or are you firmly on the White Hat side?

Search Ranking Factors for 2014

If you want your site to rank high on Google, you better keep an eye on the factors that influence the rankings, right? And mind you that you better keep an eye on those regularly, as they might change considerably over the years.

If you want a refresher, I recommend the 2014 Ranking Factors Study published by the SearchMetrics guys. The infographic summarizes the picture, but you can also read about how they performed the researched, how to interpret the numbers and so on.

Some highlights in case you are in a hurry:

  • Website technical quality is gaining importance. In other words, if your website has HTML errors, is slow or not optimized for mobile devices, your rankings will suffer.

  • Backlinks remain an important factor. However, Google is trying to put a lot more emphasis on the quality and relevancy of the links, and it’s also trying to separate natural vs. artificial backlinks.

  • Social signals like Facebook Shares and Google +1s are being considered in the ranking algorithms, though their influence is not clear.

  • Oldschool factors like keyword in the domain name are losing importance.

  • Authoritative sites seem to enjoy extra exposure in the search rankings, so focus on building a brand around your site.

SEO Myths Every Business Owner Must Understand

The larger part of SEO still remains a mystery among most people who venture online. In effort to shed some light to the SEO mysteries, a lot of myths have been brought about. Most of the myths aim at educating people on making the best use of SEO strategies. However, the information contained in the myths is not only untrue but misleading as well. This is because people tend to develop profound beliefs and take unnecessary caution even when there is no need for alarm.

It is important to be very cautions before believing in anything that people tell you with regard to SEO. It does not matter on how many people convince you on the existence of a certain SEO theory. A through scrutiny must be done before implementing any strategy instigated by people out there.
You should understand that myths are developed so easily and have the capacity to spread in a remarkably short time. In fact, myths are very persuasive and can be believed easily. However, listening to myths and following them can bring forth very serious implications to your site and business. In this regard, you must understand and avoid SEO myths at all costs if positive achievements must be registered in your business.

Let’s have a crackdown on the five common myths that tend to dominate the minds of many online businesspersons:

1.The More the Keywords the Higher the Ranking

The use of keywords for SEO has for long been abused. Majority of people who venture online have the perception that a lot of keywords are significant in elevating the rating and ranking of websites. On the contrary, use of many keywords may trigger more harm than good in terms of ranking your site.

It is important to note that search engines keep being updated over time. This means that search engine features are manipulated to suit modernity. Currently, a lot of keywords in website content are not valued by search engines. As a matter of fact, you might end up suffering penalties for misuse of keywords.

In most cases, it is advised that you use keywords sparingly. The density of main words and phrases should not exceed 2% if high web ranking must be achieved. In addition, keywords must appear natural and in context with the content at hand. By doing so, search engines will acknowledge your content as natural hence rank it accordingly.

2. Link Building Is Not Paramount

If you believe in the claims that link building is not of essence in online business, then high chances are that your business will perish before you even start venturing. You must bear in mind that connecting with the online community is the pillar behind any successful business.

For a long time now, links have always been considered valuable by search engines. In fact, efforts to eradicate the use of links by search engines only turn futile. This explains the profound use and application of links in business websites.

There are different strategies you can use to build links for your website. However, you must be very selective with the kind of technique you use. The bottom line is the link building is important and should not be snubbed.

3. The More the Links, the Better

Link stuffing is one of the common tendencies that online businesspersons embrace not knowing that it is a recipe of failure. You will at times come across a website which carries link-stuffed articles. Such articles feature links and anchor texts after a short set of words. This is triggered by the belief that a great number of links is ideal in creating perfect connection in the web.

You must not forget that articles are composed for humans and not machines. This means that you should make your articles interesting and fun to read. An article with a lot of links is not only distracting but irritating and annoying as well. It is never interesting to come across varying colors of links in an article. It is even confusing on which link you should follow when you have so many at your disposal.

In a different note, the avenue that you use in building links matters a lot. Currently, it is very possible to get a bunch of links in a very short time with the help some trending software in existence. However, most people forget to consider quality and end up focusing on quantity. The quality of links that you use should be your prime consideration. A lot of links do not matter.

4. Social Media Is Not Necessary

This is the biggest lie with regard to SEO that people instill in the minds of others. Social media has always been considered a very vital tool in promoting online visibility and SEO in general. In most cases, the belief that social media is not necessary for SEO is perpetuated by people who do not make use of the platforms.

With the likes of Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram among others, it is possible to make high gains in your online business. This is because the sites carry a huge number of people who share ideas and interact all through. You can therefore make use of the platforms to build links which will in return channel traffic in your site. You can use interesting links to bait people towards your site hence achieve high ranking in search engines.

5. Experience Does Not Matter

If you thought that SEO can be done by just any other person, then that is not so at all. Most people especially amateurs have the belief that SEO is simple hence can be done without any assistance from experienced people. It should be noted that without experience on SEO trends and principles, success may be literally impossible to achieve.

Some of the SEO trends that you must understand to the latter include social sharing, content marketing, guest posting, keyword use, back linking among others. You should have on your fingertips all the strategies on how to implement the respective tools for perfect SEO in your site. Lack of experience will only drain your efforts to waste. You might also suffer huge loses which will set you back remarkably.

While some SEO myths may carry some truth, it is important to avoid believing in anything that comes your way. The best way is to employ professionalism and factual approaches in enhancing SEO in your site as opposed to believing in baseless myths.
