Google’s Matt Cutts Admits SEO Will Only Get Harder

Just what you want to hear, right?

After pandas, penguins, penalties, and panic, Google is now adding salt to our wounds and stealing any shred of hope we had to re-gain our rankings or compete for any decent spot in the search engine.

Many of our readers have spent thousands of hours learning about and applying SEO practices to their websites, only to find the game changing and their rankings failing.

Remember the days when blog networks and article marketing were touted as solid linking strategies? Now all of those once-valued links you obtained from those systems have landed most of you in Google purgatory.

And now, SEO will become even harder?

Well, that’s what Matt Cutts, head of Google’s webspam team had to say…

Search Engine Land’s Danny Sullivan sat down with Matt Cutts during a “You & A with Matt Cutts” at the recent SMX Conference in Seattle.

When Sullivan asked Cutts about information related to paid links (LINK), Cutts said Google is constantly working on improving its tools that discover blog networks and link buying.

Google has been warning against link buying for years, and according to Cutts, the practice will become riskier as Google builds more tools and enforces it more.

Cutts also mentioned that people who purchase links may think they are escaping Google’s clutches but most are unaware of the footprint of the website from which they are buying links. This is where Google steps in. Essentially, Cutts is saying…you will have a hard time escaping Google if you buy links. (my own words)

Cutts went on to explain how SEO is entering a new phase and it will become more difficult.

“I believe, if you ask any SEO, is SEO harder now than 5-6 years ago, I think they’d say it’s a little more challenging. You can expect that to increase. Google is getting more serious about buying and selling links. Penguin showed that some stuff that may work short term won’t work in the long term.”

If you are feeling a little downtrodden, I understand. But, there is some good news on the horizon. Here are some more valid points discussed at the session:

I’ve Been Hit!

Has your rankings suffered as a result of the latest Google changes? Did you get one of those dreaded link message alerts in your Webmaster tools account?

According to Cutts, Google wants to see “earnest effort” on your part in eliminating those links from your profile. Once you remove them or at least make an effort, you can submit a reconsideration request. Google will then consider how much “progress” you made.

Sullivan asks, “What if you can’t get rid of bad links pointing to a page, should we get rid of the page?”

Cutts responded, “If it’s not an important page, you could. Or you could at least document the effort to remove the links and share it with us.”

Good news! Google is discussing the possibility of a “disavow-this-link tool that will allow webmasters to “disavow” any suspect links they see pointing to their sites. Cutts said even though Google has implemented many protective measures to combat negative SEO, there has been a lot of discussion on the topic. If the disavow link materializes, it will be ready in a matter of months.

Negative SEO refers to outside parties sending spammy links to your site to manipulate its rankings and get your site downgraded. With this disavow link you could potentially tell Google you had no part in the suspicious links which could maintain or help your rankings in the long run.

Cutts Clears Up Misconceptions About Panda and Penguin

Are they penalties? Algorithm changes?

Cutts talks about the difference between signals and penalties, a word Google rarely uses.

Here is the exchange:

Danny: What’s the deal with Penguin. Is it a penalty?

Matt: We look at it as something designed to tackle low-quality content. It started out with Panda, and then we noticed that there was still a lot of spam and Penguin was designed to tackle that. It’s an algorithmic change, but when we use a word like “penalty,” we’re talking about a manual action taken by the web spam team — it wasn’t that.

We don’t think of it as a penalty. We think of it as, “We have over 200 signals, and this is one of the signals.”

Danny: So from now, does “penalty” mean it’s a human thing?

Matt: That’s pretty much how we look at it. In fact, we don’t use the word “penalty” much, we refer to things as a “manual action.” Part of the reason why we do that breakdown is, how transparent can we be? We do monthly updates where we talk about changes, and in the past year, we’ve been more transparent about times when we take manual action. We send out alerts via Google Webmaster Tools.

What is Your Experience?

Many of you have commented that Google downgraded your site and you are disgruntled and unhappy because of it. And others including SEO consultants/companies mentioned that their sites have not suffered at all. Some sites have even received a boost. Do you fall into one of these categories?

Understanding Google and What Really Matters this Season

It’s almost Thanksgiving, a time when we reflect on the events of our lives and try to express gratitude for all that is good.

A special Thanksgiving message….and thoughts about Google…

When it comes to Google and the algorithm changes of the last 8 months, many of us can officially say that it hasn’t been the best of years.

I am reminded of many of your comments from previous articles where some of your sites were downgraded enough to lose substantial income and others lost everything as their earnings plummeted. While some are gradually picking themselves back up, for others it will take much longer, if ever, to regain the ground that was lost.

Much of my work focuses on understanding Google, why websites are downgraded or upgraded, and helping businesses use their content to become stars in their industries. While working, I have been so mesmerized with everything “Google” for the last year, that I lost sight of many other things.

Yes, I LOVE what I do, but today I decided to reflect on other matters…

I am writing this article in a doctor’s office where I am supporting my little sister with some health issues she is dealing with. As I sit here, I reflect on my work and what really matters to me. I look at my sister and realize that nothing comes close to the relationships we share with the people we love. No matter what Google changes, adds, or throws at the internet world, it will never change the bonds we share.

But, alas, while relationships are vitally important, for some of us Google’s changes affect the income we make that allows us to spend more time with the people we love. So, for this special blog post edition, I decided to summarize the major changes I feel are necessary for our readers to think about as they approach the end of the year and start fresh in 2013…
Quality…According to Google

You will often hear us talk about QUALITY content as the driving force behind this new SEO environment. But, here’s the problem…
What you may deem as quality, Google may NOT. To make it in this post Panda, Penguin world, you must create quality content the way Google wants it.

You may think putting some links in your footer will bring your visitors a great user experience, but Google thinks otherwise. Unique content…not enough. Grammar mistakes…you’re toast.

Here is a recent article I wrote that discusses what Google is looking for as it relates to content.
Why Your Great Content Will Never Become King

What Most Webmasters Don’t Know About Their Failing Website Content

Over-Optimization / Panda

Over-optimization has been played out and most of you know exactly what it means. But for those who are new here and may not understand it in its entirety, let me summarize.
Over-optimization refers to any practice that involves trying to manipulate the search engines to increase rankings. Google’s updates have addressed these issues and targeted websites that were “over-SEO’d”

Some of these practices are…

Links – Excess exact match anchor text. Pre-Penguin, webmasters were adding their exact keywords to a large amount of their links to try and rank for that particular keyword. Presently, this practice will get you downgraded.

Brand names, urls, and generic phrases should make up a large part of your linking profile. How much? If it happens naturally, that is the right formula. If you must use a formula, I wouldn’t exceed 10-30% for exact match keywords for your anchor text. Also, diversify from where your links come, and focus more on related sites.

Keyword-stuffed titles and metatags – One keyword is plenty for titles and metadata. In fact, Google doesn’t even consider meta keywords anymore and meta descriptions are only there to entice people to click on your site in the search results pages. Avoid using too many keywords in your content; just think “natural” and write for your audience first—the right amount of keywords will follow.

Thin affiliate sites – Part of my work involves inspecting downgraded sites to see if there are any issues related to an algorithm change. Many are affiliate sites and 9 times out of 10, I find problems with duplicate content. I’m not talking about blatant copying. I’m referring to snippets of content that are similar to the vendor.

In one instance, a webmaster lost rankings after a Panda update. I instructed him to re-write the duplicate descriptions I discovered and add content that would separate him from the thousands of other affiliate sites that were simply regurgitating the vendor’s information. Once Google launched the next Panda update, this webmaster’s site jumped back up to where it had been before the downgrade.
As a former scientist, I understand this one example does not denote a cause-and-effect relationship. But, we can deduce that affiliate marketers must distinguish themselves from the pack and offer unique content people will not find anywhere else on the web.

Improving Google Analytics Dashboard Sharing

We’re happy to announce you can soon share and collaborate on Google Analytics dashboards!

Dashboards give an overview on how your properties are performing, and are even more powerful as you can create dashboards that you and your teammates can see and edit. Dashboard sharing is a nice complement to dashboard template creation: templates enable creating copies of dashboard configurations, and dashboard sharing enables you to collaborate with your team on a single shared dashboard.

You’ll be able to use this new feature as we roll this out in the coming weeks. At that time, start by creating a dashboard or viewing an existing one and then clicking on the “Share” menu. Look for the new “Share Dashboard” option:

This will make a copy of your dashboard that is available to everyone on the profile.  Private dashboards will be grouped together, and shared dashboards will be as can be seen in the report navigation on the left side of Google Analytics:

Learn more about dashboard sharing.

Asset Sharing
This marks another enhancement in Google Analytics asset sharing, complementing the sharing capabilities of assets like annotations, advanced segments and custom reports. Google Analytics offers two forms of asset sharing today: creating asset templates, and collaborating on a single asset like we’re launching soon with dashboards. We are listening closely to user feedback on sharing, and planning more sharing features that you will see in the future.

Use dashboard sharing today to work more effectively with your team, and to enable richer reporting and data analysis.

Seo Techniques

Techniques All Top Web

Sites

Should Obtain

Most Common SEO Techniques All Top Web Sites Should Obtain.Whenever you enter a query in a search engine and hit ‘enter’ you get a list of web results that contain that query term. Users normally tend to visit websites that are at the top of this list as they perceive those to be more relevant to the query. If you have ever wondered why some of these websites rank better than the others then you must know that it is because of a powerful seo called Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

SEO is such a hot topic these days. How do you get your web site within the first page or two of the search engines? How do you increase your Google page rank?
To get a good optimization for your website you should consider creating a good search engine. The key is to be precise about the terms used in order to get the best possible position in terms of rankings.

Title Tag

Here we discuss an important seo technique wiche called the title tag has been – and probably will always be – one of the most important factors in achieving high search engine rankings.

This is one of the most important places to have a keyword because what is written inside thetag shows in search results as your page title. The title tag must be short (6 or 7 words at most) and the the keyword must be near the beginning.

Title tags are definitely one of the “big three” as far as the algorithmic weight given to them by search engines; they are equally as important as your visible text copy and the links pointing to your pages – perhaps even more so

Meta Tags

In SEO (Search Engine Optimization) meta tags still play an important role. Especially the use of the meta description is very important. This tag is shown by search engines as a small text item in the search results. Make sure that the meta tags on your website are unique for each and every page and try to make them as attractive as possible. Both a relevant title tag and the description tag will have to persuade a visitor to click on the link in the search results. HTML meta tags are officially page data tags that lie between the open and closing head tags in the HTML code of a document. The text in these tags is not displayed, but parsable and tells the browsers (or other web services) specific information about the page. Simply, it “explains” the page so a browser can understand it. Here’s a code example of meta tags:

====================================

1
2
3
4
5
6
7
<head>
<title>
    Learn Web Stuff
</title>
    < meta name="description" content="Learn everything about web designing & development">
    < meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;charset=UTF-8">
</head>

====================================

Relevant Content

Having content relevant to your main page or site topic is perhaps the most important SEO aspect of a page. You can put all the keywords you want in the Meta tags and alt image tags, etc — but if the actual readable text on the page is not relevant to the target keywords, it ends up basically being a futile attempt.

While it is important to include as many keywords in your page copy as possible, it is equally as important for it to read well and make sense. I’m sure we’ve all seen keyword stuffed pages written by   SEO  Companies   that honestly don’t make much sense from the reader’s point of view.

When creating your site copy, just write naturally, explaining whatever information you’re discussing. The key is to make it relevant, and to have it make sense to the reader. Even if you trick the search engines into thinking your page is great — when a potential customer arrives at the site and can’t make heads or tails of your information and it just feels spammy to them — you can bet they’ll be clicking on the next web site within a matter of seconds.

Social Media

One of the most under appreciated aspects of SEO is the necessary alignment of SEO strategy with social media activity.SEO has been all the rage for local businesses for some time now. Most SEOs are very skilled at optimizing a website for local using on-page, backlink anchor text, and Google Places pages.

At the same time, Social Media has become a critical piece of the overall SEO puzzle. Shares, likes, follows, and +1′s are all known to positively impact overall ranking for a website.

Social media has become a platform that is easily accessible to anyone with internet access. Increased communication for organizations fosters brand awareness and often, improved customer service. Additionally, social media serves as a relatively inexpensive platform for organizations to implement marketing campaigns. In addition to covering social media marketing generally, Search Engine Land also has areas specifically about particular major social media sites and social search sites: Delicious,Face book ,Foursquare,Google+,Twitter,YouTube,Search Engines,Word Of Mouth & Buzz Search Engines.

Keyword Focus

Although your focused keyword may not have a hundred and one uses, you should always try to be as forward thinking as possible when considering other optional keywords. Sometimes the search term that Google looks for may not be the same one that you would have typed when looking for it yourself. You should always do research to find other ways that web surfers may try to look up your product or service.

Keywords Dynamic

Even if a particular keyword has generated a lot of traffic during the course of your SEO campaign, don’t let that prevent you from cycling your keyword focus. Search trends change as much as social ones do, so there’s never a guarantee that one term will consistently prove fruitful. Always be on the lookout for other applicable keywords that may bring traffic to your website.

Site Maps

Pages with site maps are ranked higher by search engines because they can be indexed easily. A site map (navigation bar) provides directions to content on your whole site. When your site is not very large, you still want to have a site map to help raise your search engine rankings.

Check Bounce Rate

Bounce rate is the percentage of users who visited only a single page of your website and didn’t find content worthy, so they  didn’t visit any other page, to dig your services in detail.

The longer a person stays on your website, the higher your Page Rank becomes. The content on your site is important to keep customers coming back. If you have a blog or site that lists all of your posts or content on your first page, your bounce rate will be unnaturally high as users enter, read new posts, and leave . Appcotech  states that a good bounce rate for a standard website is between 40 and 60 percent.

Identify your Intended Audience

The first step in any SEO campaign should always be determining who the intended audience of your good or service is. While it’s easy to simply focus on your business as the driving force behind your SEO operations, it always helps to be a more specific in your approach. By selecting a certain product as the core keyword of your campaign, you will be able to attract more traffic than otherwise.

Video and audio podcasts

Do some podcasts! Video and audio podcasts may be streamed live, and they are best when they contain valuable and timely information the consumer. Take advantage of the current popularity of pod casts by videotaping or voice recording a marketing message. Description of your podcast may then appear in search engines.

Aside from having a greater degree of control over the details of your campaign, you will also be briefed on any setbacks or major developments as they occur. As a result, your optimization and social media work will go without a hitch, and you’ll be able to fine tune the particulars of the campaign as you see fit.
